Loan Policy
Borrowing Privileges
- Loan periods: The library provides varying loan periods based on the type of materials borrowed and the borrower’s relationship to the University. These loan periods may be subject to renewal if there are no holds on the item.
- Students: Postgraduate students may borrow library materials for two weeks. Media materials, such as DVDs, may have shorter loan periods.
- Faculty and staff: Faculty and staff have extended load periods to accommodate research, teaching or work responsibilities. If the library recalls an item, faculty and staff patrons are expected to return it promptly.
Limits on the Number of Items
Students: Postgraduate students may borrow up to four items.
Faculty and staff: No limit is placed on the number of items for faculty and staff may borrow.
Renewals
- Renewal limits:Borrowers may renew items for an extended loan period, provided there are no holds or recalls on them.
- Students: Postgraduate students may renew twice.
- Faculty and staff: Faculty and staff may renew materials multiple times.
Library materials may be renewed:
- Online through the library's integrated system (KOHA);
- Via email (library@jhu.edu.ng);
- In person at the circulation desk.
Holds and Recalls
- Holds: Library users may place holds on materials that are currently checked out, ensuring priority access to the item once the materials become available.
- Recalls: In cases where another library patron requires an item urgently, the library reserves the right to recall the item before the original due date. The borrower will be notified of the new due date and expected to return the item promptly.
Library Fines and Fees
- Overdue fines: To encourage the timely return of borrowed materials, the library imposes fines for each day an item is overdue. The fine amount may vary depending on the type of material and loan period.
- Lost or damaged materials: Borrowers are responsible for the safekeeping of library materials in their possession. If an item is lost or damaged, the borrower must notify the library immediately and may be responsible for replacement costs and processing fees.
Library Membership
- All currently enrolled students, faculty, and staff of James Hope University are automatically eligible for library membership.
- External individuals, such as alumni and community members, may be granted library membership upon meeting specific criteria and completing the necessary registration process.
